With a new feature, WhatsApp aims to secure calls.
The WhatsApp instant messaging service is working on a new feature for the app that will let users hide their device's IP address when on calls.
And based on what was observed in the most recent beta of the WhatsApp software for Android smartphones, a new option has been included in the call settings called "IP address protection during calls."
If this option is turned on, it will be challenging for the other parties involved in the call to determine the user's location.
To make use of this feature, the call is securely forwarded to WhatsApp servers, which securely transfer the connection while the call is in progress. However, the encryption and routing procedures used in the new functionality may have a minor impact on call quality.
The WhatsApp platform aims to offer users an extra degree of security against any potential attempts to trace their precise location via call data. The user's IP address is concealed and replaced with a different, anonymous, encrypted IP address through WhatsApp servers when the "IP address protection during calls" option is enabled.
This feature is the latest in a string of enhancements made by the WhatsApp platform in an effort to safeguard its users and in response to rising concerns about online tracking and digital privacy.
Although this feature is still in development, it is anticipated that it will be made available to all program users in later versions.
The platform is actively testing new security features, including passkey support and the integration of email as a second method of identity verification.
It's important to note that end-to-end encryption technology protects all messages and calls sent and received using WhatsApp from third-party eavesdropping and espionage activities.
