Despite the decline in sales, Apple may continue to lead.
In research released today, Thursday, Counterpoint Research stated that the industry is deteriorating because of the United States and China and that this year's worldwide smartphone sales are on track to be the worst in ten years.
However, the survey indicated that sales of expensive iPhones are resilient and that Apple may surpass Samsung as the world leader in smartphone shipments this year.
Shipments, which are the number of devices that smartphone vendors provide to retailers, are a gauge of anticipated demand but are distinct from sales.
According to Counterpoint, smartphone shipments would drop by 6% annually to 1.15 billion handsets in 2023.
According to Counterpoint's analysis, "Asia is one of the main obstacles to positive growth," with headwinds delaying China's anticipated economic turnaround at the beginning of the year and the region as a whole witnessing an exacerbated fall across emerging countries.
While people in China continue to be frugal with their spending, the Chinese economy has faltered this year and fallen short of expectations of a quick recovery.
Smartphone purchases in China, which peaked at 450 million units annually on average, have decreased to 270 million annually, according to Karn Chauhan, senior analyst at Counterpoint, who wrote to CNBC via email. This has been cited as a major factor in the reduction in worldwide smartphone sales.
According to Counterpoint Research, North America has continued to stymie the global recovery, with the area experiencing double-digit decreases for the whole year after a "disappointing" first half of the year.
"Consumers are reluctant to upgrade their devices, driving replacement rates in the United States and globally to record levels," the research group said. "Despite a strong job market and declining inflation," it added.
Even with the drop in overall smartphone shipments, devices in the flagship device category remained fairly durable.
The iPhone 15, Apple's upcoming flagship smartphone, is scheduled to debut in September of next year. According to Counterpoint, this might give the business a strong offer through the end of the year.
Given the demand in areas like China and other Asian nations where there is an "increasing trend of people willing to pay a higher price for phones," Chauhan said the analytics firm anticipates a minor increase in Apple shipments year over year.
According to the most recent report from the analytics firm (Canalys), (Counterpoint) predicted that the American company might take the top spot in the world in terms of annual shipments this year for the first time ever, but Samsung is still in the lead.
