Google tests the opening of the phone lock using smartwatches
Google intends to introduce a brand-new function that will let customers unlock an Android phone lock using a smartwatch.
Researchers who specialize in the Android operating system kept an eye on the "Watch Unlock" smartwatch feature when it was tested on Google Pixel phones.
The new function, according to Google, is "another suitable way to open the phone lock, when hands are wet, or the phone does not recognize the user's face, for example."
To open the gadgets, users typically use their fingerprints, a function for characterizing their faces, or direct entry of the traffic code.
The new feature may prove useful for smartwatch owners in particular situations, knowing that they will have to manually activate them from the device settings and that they will need to wear the watch and bring it closer to open the lock, even though opening phones using smartwatches may be less secure than traditional protection methods.
Earlier this year, as part of its participation in the CES 2023 technology conference, Google unveiled this new capability.
The "Active Unlock API" function, which was created on the application programming interface for opening the lock in the Android 13 system, needs to be used with a smartwatch running the "OS" operating system that Google also creates.
The launch date of this new feature is not yet known, but it is anticipated to coincide with the unveiling of the second-generation "Pixel Watch" and the upcoming Pixel 8 smartphones later this year. The rest of the Android phone lineup is also anticipated to be supported.
