TikTok is prohibited on city-owned smartphones in New York.
TikTok has been removed from city-owned devices in New York, and organizations have 30 days to comply with the prohibition.
After reviewing TikTok, New York City's Cyber Command, a division of the Office of Technology and Innovation, issued a new directive ordering its removal from city-owned devices. According to a city official, TikTok posed a security risk to the city's tech networks.
The mandate states that the city forbids its employees from downloading the app, using it, or visiting the TikTok website using municipal-owned devices.
"Social media is useful in connecting New Yorkers to each other and to the city, but we need to make sure we always use these platforms in a safe way," a New York City Council spokeswoman stated.
The representative stated that NYC Cyber Command frequently investigates and improves preventative methods to safeguard the data of New Yorkers.
The city highlighted federal legislation that was approved earlier this year that outlaws the app as well as US Office of Management and Budget recommendations that prohibit TikTok use across government institutions.
Because of concerns that TikTok and its Chinese owner, ByteDance, would use the information they collect to snoop on Americans, Congress has been trying for more than three years to pass legislation outlawing the app nationwide.
A number of US states have prohibited the software from being used on smartphones belonging to the government, and in May, Montana became the first state to do so after its governor, Greg Gianforte, signed a bill that prohibited the app throughout the entire state.
TikTok users and the company itself filed a lawsuit against the state soon after the bill became law, claiming that it infringed on Montanans' right to free speech. The app can no longer be used with government-owned technology in 33 states.
Notably, the application was already prohibited from being downloaded or used on any government-owned devices by New York State through an internal policy that was implemented three years prior to this public prohibition. A few New York PR platforms are still permitted by the regulation to utilize the app for promotion.
